Dental Bridges

Dental bridges also known as fixed dental prosthesis are a conventional way to replace a missing tooth. This approach passes the test of time and in some cases is still be the best way to restore a gap. I offer different types of bridges with all-ceramic dental bridges as the most commonly used type for the replacements of one or more missing teeth.  A bridge consists of the missing tooth which is an artificial tooth (bridge pontic), bonded on the adjacent (abutment teeth) during the procedure to literally bridge the gap presented.

Dental bridges involve the removal of a significant part of the adjacent teeth, therefore these days I rarely suggest a bridge when the adjacent teeth are totally intact. However, when these teeth have already been crowned or have extensive fillings, a conventional bridge may become an option. Modern techniques involve much less tissue removal than before, making dental bridges a much less invasive option than in the past.
They can be particularly helpful in cases where implants are not our first option.

What my patients love the most about dental bridges?

1. Replacing a missing tooth with a bridge has significant aesthetic improvements and functional benefits

2. Fairly quick procedure (similar to dental crowns it will usually require 2 appointments)

3. More cost effective than dental implants

What my patients dislike the most about dental bridges?

1. Risk of damage to adjacent teeth as they are prepared and tooth structure removed

2. Maintenance needed for cleaning under a bridge

3. Dental bridges do not last as long as dental implants

4. Potential of decay under the bridge and adjacent teeth holding the bridge

There are many types of bridges and choosing the right type of dental bridge involves considering several factors such as :

- Oral health assessment of neighboring teeth and overall oral condition
- Location of missing teeth and to consider functional and aesthetic impact on your smile
- Long term goals
- Budget
- Personal preferences to consider appearance, comfort and maintenance
These factors can be discussed in details at your consultation appointment and together we will devise the best suitable plan for you.
